Xtend Barre

Xtend Barre is a 55-minute full body immersion of muscle-sculpting moves, fusing dance, Pilates and sculpting exercises at the ballet barre to give you a long and lean physique of a ballet-dancer, without added bulk.

Xtend Barre implements heavy repetitions and isometric conditioning using your own body weight to get deep into the muscles for that muscle-sculpting barre-burn, followed by stretching series to help lengthen the muscles after you’ve exhausted them, and finally dance-inspired cardio series are sprinkled throughout the class to keep your heart rate pumping and the calories burning.

Classes are set to the latest music mixes in a fun and energized atmosphere. Our instructors incorporate inspirational coaching; challenging students to push themselves beyond what they think is possible in order to achieve the results they strive for.

No matter what your fitness level is, every class will have your heart pumping, muscles screaming and change happening.

Xtend Barre Technique

Learn the lingo, master the basics, and perfect your form. Great for new students, but is also suitable for experienced students looking to hone their technique. This 55-minute class moves at a slower pace than our all levels classes. More time is spent on alignment and proper set up, and choreography is kept to a minimum. Easier to follow, but by no means easy.

Xtend Barrecamp

Xtend Barrecamp is not for the faint of heart! This 70-minute workout amplifies the traditional Xtend Barre workout with extra cardio sequences and more boot camp-style drills. We incorporate HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in which barre sculpting intervals are mixed with high intensity bursts of cardio to help you burn more fat than ever before. The pace is fast and the energy is high.

It’s recommended that you’ve taken an Xtend Barre class a few times before taking the Xtend Barrecamp class.

Babies on Board

Babies on Board is a 55-minute no-babysitter-necessary post-natal barre class designed to give moms a dynamic workout at the ballet barre and the Pilates mat with their babies safely nestled in carriers during the barre segment, and alongside or with mom during the mat portion. Baby is worn in the Ergo/Bjorn/carrier and must be approximately 18 pounds in weight or less. Developed with careful consideration of the physiology of a new mom’s body, Babies on Board works to restore core strength, condition embattled muscles, strengthen back and arms for carrying and nursing, and gives moms the fun, challenging cardio-conditioning class they are seekingwhile providing a safe, engaging environment for their little ones in tow. Physician 6 week clearance required.

Xtend Barre Stick – Coming Soon!

The Xtend Barre Stick is a 55-minute workout that utilizes the Pilates Stick attached to the ballet barre to add resistance to your Xtend Barre workout. This class will build your cardio endurance, upper body strength and core stability. Build upon the traditional Xtend Barre workout with a bit less dance, but a lot of Xtend Barre grace combined with added strength, stability and core training.

Natalie Strahorn – Studio Owner/ Xtend Barre Instructor / Pilates Instructor

Natalie discovered barre classes post-college while living in New York City and working for leading media and retail companies, Cosmopolitan magazine, American Eagle Outfitters and ALLOY Inc. Barre class was a welcome break from her normal gym routine, which left her frustrated from pounding away on the treadmill with little results. She was thrilled to discover a full-body work out that exhausted and sculpted every muscle, yet left her feeling excited for her next class. As a former competitive cheerleader, Natalie connected with the music, energy and heart-pumping pace of the class.

After eight years of working and living in Manhattan, Natalie returned to her roots in Northern Virginia. Seeking out the barre classes she missed from New York, she discovered Xtend Barre in DC and was immediately hooked. Her love for Xtend Barre quickly prompted her to transition from student to instructor. Natalie has two Pilates Mat certifications from Power Pilates and a Barre and Stick Barre certification from Xtend Barre.

Natalie is passionate about sharing the Xtend Barre method, and has opened Xtend Barre Old Town as an outlet for fusing her passion for fitness with her ability to motivate, challenge and inspire her students to enjoy the mind-body benefits of the method and push themselves beyond what they think is possible.

Melinda Hall – Xtend Barre Instructor

Melinda is a certified NASM personal trainer, AFAA group fitness instructor, and also holds an American Heart Association Heartsaver AED certification. She has been leading group fitness classes and training clients personally for the past five years; including a variety of cardio and strength training programs. Before beginning her career in fitness, Melinda danced professionally for eleven years. She was most recently seen in the national Tour of Radio City’s Christmas Spectacular. Other National Tour credits include: Contact and CATS. Regional credits include: CATS, and two productions of West Side Story at Barrington Stage Company as well as North Shore Music Theatre. Melinda grew up studying various forms of dance in her hometown of Stafford, Virginia. Alongside her performance career, she has taught for the past thirteen years at numerous dance schools. Melinda enjoys sharing her love and passion for dance from children to adults. She has also judged for several national dance competitions.

Melinda’s extremely excited to begin a new journey as an Xtend Barre instructor with the amazing team at Old Town; where she’ll continue to share her love and passion for health, fitness, and dance to others!

Sharon Metz – Xtend Barre Instructor

Sharon is AFAA, BASI Pilates, and Xtend Barre certified. She first started taking Group Exercise classes in 2004 while at college in Boston – everything from Pilates and Yoga, to Body Conditioning and Kickboxing, to Step and Spin. She loved the camaraderie and variety of classes, which she sought upon returning home to DC. Sharon discovered Xtend Barre in 2009 and was immediately hooked: here was a workout that combined all aspects of exercise that she previously needed to take or teach multiple classes to achieve! Sharon promises a fun yet challenging experience at the barre, and always encourages her students to push their limits.

When not at the studio, Sharon is in Legal Recruiting at an Intellectual Property law firm, and lives in Bethesda with her husband, Rob.

Catherine Margaret Fischer – Xtend Barre Instructor

Catherine’s immeasurable love for dance began with her classical ballet training under the instruction of Kathryn Wheeler at the Mount Dora School of Ballet in Mount Dora, Florida. It continued to flourish as she earned her BA in Dance from DeSales University under the instruction of Timothy Cowart, Trinette Singleton (Joffrey Ballet), Tara Madsen Robbins, and Angela Sigley.

Catherine first discovered Xtend after she moved to Washington DC in the summer of 2013. After taking her first class with Natalie in Georgetown, she fell in love with the unique combination of Pilates, dance technique, strength and cardio training Xtend offers. Its accessibility to clients of all fitness backgrounds, challenging and energizing movements, and precise technique are elements that set this workout apart from the rest!

She currently teaches a variety of dance classes in both Reston and Beltsville, hoping to give back, and share her passion for dance & fitness with others.

Catherine is thrilled to be joining Xtend as an instructor and hopes to see you at the barre!

Hayley Jackson – Xtend Barre Instructor

Growing up in Northern Virginia, Hayley was first introduced to Pilates as a conditioning method to enhance her classical ballet training. She discovered Xtend Barre classes in the summer of 2011, a fusion of her two passions – Pilates and dance, and was immediately hooked. Hayley also found Xtend Barre classes to be a perfect complement to her running routine. She loved the results — increased flexibility, core strength, and stability — and believes athletes of all types will find Xtend Barre a great supplement to their regular exercise routines.

Hayley completed her Xtend Barre and Pilates mat certifications in the summer of 2012 and is thrilled to share her passion. She hopes students will leave her class feeling strong and confident!

Additionally, Melissa holds a B.S. in Nursing from Andrews University. Katy has always been passionate about health and fitness, participating in cheerleading, dance and group fitness classes throughout her life. After finding Xtend Barre, she became addicted to the combination of dance, exercise and energy in each class. She is thrilled to be a part of the Xtend Barre team and for the opportunity to help clients reach their fitness goals. When not instructing or taking classes, Katy works in Marketing and also teaches at a preschool in Georgetown. She can’t wait to meet you at the barre!

One of her favorite things about Xtend is that every class is different.
